Claiming for a Broken Handrail on Stairs — Tenant Rights

If you rent from a council or housing association and there is a broken or unsafe handrail on the stairs in your property, your landlord has a legal obligation to repair it. A broken handrail is a serious safety hazard that can cause falls and injuries, and is covered under the Landlord and Tenant Act 1985 and the Homes (Fitness for Human Habitation) Act 2018.

You should report the defect to your landlord in writing, keep copies of all correspondence, and allow a reasonable time for repairs to be carried out. If your landlord fails to act, you may be entitled to claim compensation on a No Win, No Fee basis.
